Have you ever missed someone so much that it caused you actual physical pain? Have you ever grieved the loss of someone for so long that you thought you would never get over it? What if the person you were missing was sitting right next to you, but there was nothing you could do to bring that person back?

That is exactly what my life has been like since my mom was diagnosed with Early Onset Alzheimer’s Disease at the age of 62. I have been missing her and grieving for her ever since. At just 25 years old, I was forced to navigate the biggest storm of my life so far, while learning lessons of life, love, and friendship along the way.

Learning to Weather the Storm is a real and raw account of one daughter's struggle to accept her mom's Alzheimer's. Learning to Weather the Storm is guaranteed to make you laugh, cry, and pick up the phone to call your mom.

Learning to Weather the Storm A Story of Life Love and Alzheimer eBook Lauren Dykovitz

When a loved one gets diagnosed with a terminal illness, we feel helpless. We feel at a total loss about what to expect, what to do, how it will affect our ill family member, how this will affect us. The emotional toll is excruciating, and it feels like you're holding your breath the entire time, hoping that maybe, just maybe, today will be a good day.

We go online and read medical websites, discussion forums, statistics... But nothing really prepares you for this new reality.

Lauren's book gives a real, relatable face to Alzheimer's. It helps us understand the all-encompassing impact of what the disease does to the entire family. It gives others in similar circumstances a message to let them know that yes, this is horrible, yes, it sucks badly and turns your world upside down, and no, you're not alone.

Even if you don't have a family member with Alzheimer's, chances are you probably know someone who does. If you don't know what to say or how to offer comfort, this book will give you an insider's glimpse of how isolating it can feel to see a loved one slowly slip away and what you can do to offer some support.

I recommend this book to anyone who wants to feel less alone, or to anyone who wants to be able to understand a friend who may be going through caring for a family member with Alzheimer's.

Learning to Weather the Storm A Story of Life Love and Alzheimer eBook Lauren Dykovitz Reviews

Lauren Dykovitz likens her mother's Alzheimer's to a gradually approaching storm, and indeed before you know what's happening you're in the midst of a heavy downpour with no shelter in sight. Lauren's mother develops Alzheimer's at the same time Lauren is planning her wedding. Her writing is honest and intense, and she pulls no punches. We experience her emotions -- the shock, the grief, the anger and more -- right along with the author. Lauren experiences Alzheimer's from multiple sides. She helps her father care for her mother on a day-to-day basis, and she becomes a long-distance caregiver when she moves to a distant town to support her husband's career. Through it all, one thing is clear Lauren loves her mother, and she will do anything she can to fight Alzheimer's.
Excellent book! You will laugh and you will cry. Very heartfelt. Well done!
Can completely relate to Lauren's journey. My heart goes out to her. well written.
I got this soon after we got moms "official" diagnosis, although we already had a pretty good idea of what was happening. This is a plain and simple story of a daughter and her struggle. Our struggle. I admit I could only read short pieces of it at a time, too many tears of understanding.
A very personal portrayal of trying to deal with a loved one's Alzheimers disease. I really enjoyed the book. Lauren captured the conflicting emotions of caring for a parent with an incurable disease. You can feel her growth as she constantly adapts to the changing landscape of Alzheimers. I pray for her and her family.
I read "Learning to Weather the Storm" in 2 days. It was hard to put it down once I started it. Lauren expertly pulls you in, making you feel like a participant in the events she's writing about. It's personal. It's raw. It's real. It's an emotional roller coaster of happiness, sadness and every emotion in between. Everyone can learn a lesson from this book, whether you know someone with Alzheimer's or not slow down, enjoy life, love fiercely and dance like no one is watching.
When reading Lauren’s story, I felt as if she was sitting right next to me saying every word on the pages. She will make you laugh out loud but don’t be fooled because two sentences later you will be crying like a baby! The way she describes finding herself and not letting the horrible disease of Alzheimer’s win is something that everyone should know. From those having personal experiences to those who don’t know anything about this disease; it’s a book for all readers. I am honored to have read it.
