Ten stories from the 'brilliant' Katherine Mansfield set in New Zealand. As Vincent O'Sullivan states, those encountering Mansfield's stories for the first time have invariably found they 'were alive, they were witty, they were moving, they covered new ground'. But with about 70 stories to choose from and a vast array of themes and approaches, where do you start, and how do you begin to understand and best appreciate her writing and achievements? This series features selections of her best stories, grouped by subject and introduced by Mansfield scholar Vincent O'Sullivan, who is also a writer of fiction in his own right. Each volume offers a different way to view Mansfield's work. This selection includes her most-loved stories about the New Zealand of her childhood. As O'Sullivan explains, his choices cover 'everything of importance that happened to her, that she observed and experienced, between childhood in Wellington's wooden houses, to her deciding in Switzerland in July 1922, that her final paragraph about a singing bird was the place for her to stop'.Other titles in the MANSFIELD SELECTIONS seriesIn Bavaria ISBN 978-1-77553-498-3Marriage & Families ISBN 978-1-77553-501-0Sex & Lies ISBN 978-1-77553-499-0Women Alone ISBN 978-1-77553-502-7

Although she was never completely satisfied with her own work, Katherine Mansfield has the craft of short-story writing honed to a degree that is remarkable. She also has a rare gift for descriptive prose and incisive characterisations and that is very apparent in the story ‘Prelude’. I admit to smiling to myself as I read that story, about moving from “Town” to the country, to a large property in Karori. Times change and Karori is about 4km (just under 2.5 miles) from the CBD today and is one of Wellington’s biggest suburbs. [Katherine’s family moved from inner city Thorndon to Karori in 1894 when Katherine was six.]The same family who feature in ‘Prelude’ (the Burnell family) also take centre stage in ‘At the Bay’ and again Mansfield delights with her descriptive prose, and also with her well-known satire. New Zealand has always prided itself on being an egalitarian society although there seems to be some prejudice (The Doll’s House), featuring the Burnell family again. Her superb characterisation skills are very much to the fore in ‘The Stranger’ and Mr Hammond is rather cruelly wrought.
Reading the stories in this book is so evocative for me and takes me back to my own young self. I have visited Mansfield’s childhood home in Tinakori Road, now fully restored. I lived in Thorndon (Prelude), spent a lot of time in Karori and almost bought a house there (Prelude). I am very familiar with the sight of Soames Island out in the harbour (Quarantine Island in ‘Prelude’), walked many times down Thorndon Quay (the Esplanade in ‘The Wind Blows’ – and it really does blow!), day trips to Eastbourne (At the Bay), and spent five days a week for four years walking up Hill Street to attend St Mary’s College (Taking the Veil). Mt Cook Gaol (the red brick prison in ‘Ole Underwood’) was demolished and I visited many times the Dominion Museum that was built in its place.
I realise that this review doesn’t really critique Mansfield’s work, but I simply don’t have the skills, and far better writers and reviewers have done that so much better than I could, so I will simply say that many of these stories are probably my favourite Mansfield works.

New Zealand Stories Mansfield Selections edition by Katherine Mansfield Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
great book.
I enjoyed all the stories. It is a book full of interesting stories about early New Zealand. The author coloured her stories with descriptive, vivid sentences. She used whole paragraphs to describe single scenes.
Mansfield was a genius, about half of these stories are among the finest of her work - the others less so but still brilliant. In my opinion only Carver, Lawrence and Chekov write short stories that match Mansfield. Look on her works ye writers and despair....
Beautiful wide ranging stories, each one an unique gem. Could almost feel that I was
visiting the New Zealand of old. I especially enjoyed how she portrayed a New Zealand family, especially the children.
